Lifx + Third Generation Review

Picture
This is in progress and will be updated with more detail at a later time.  Until then, I have posted my initial impression of the bulb.
Initial impression:

The Bulb:
  • At 1,100 lumens, the light is extremly bright.  1 bulb will easily light up an entire room.
    • I suggest buying a lamp with a diffuser instead of directly relying on the built in one.
      • I found that the Fillsta Table Lamp from IKEA worked out the best.
  • The infrared lights work out very well with my security cameras.  They make the room seem as if it is completely lit up.
    • These turn on automatically whenever the light is turned off.  Expect a constant power draw from these bulbs unless you have a lamp with a physical switch to turn them off.

The Software:
  • Connecting to the app was easy as was connecting to Samsung SmartThings.
    • I could only find the last generation of the bulb in SmartThings but appears to work without any issues.
  • The Lifx app has some nice built in themes and effects.
    • The Music effect does not appear to work at all.  It is basically the same as the flame effect but with a larger range of brightness.  Even in complete silence it constantly flickers.  If it does pick up any sound, it does not appear to be in sync with it at all.

Other Thoughts:
  • I find that the secret to mood lighting is low lumens spread out over a large area.
  • If you can get a massive softbox celing lamp with one center bulb port on it, this light would be perfect for it.

More to come...
