Windchill Doesn't Need to Be Boring

Why is it that business software always looks so boring?
Maybe it's just me, but I have been tired of seeing the same-looking interfaces for a long time. You always get the same white backgrounds with tables and buttons, etc. I'm not saying you don't need those things, but for software like Windchill, why does it have to feel like you're at work? This is software that, for those who use it, is meant to be open all day. You spend your entire workday looking at this thing, so why doesn't the interface look exciting? Why is it that business software 'has' to look 'professional'?

The next generation of workers, and everyone after that, is going to start a new job only to see Windchill for the first time and lose all of their excitement. People don't want to feel like they're at work. More needs to be done to enhance how work gets done. I am certainly no expert on design or on all the things that can be done to enhance a worker's experience, but look at this sexy interface! Damn, I'd sure be happy starting a job with software that looks like that.

I think the point of this post is to remind us to truly think about how the user interacts with the software. I like to give things a 'first-look test.' If, upon first looking at a piece of software, you don't immediately get excited, then you need to look for something else or at least make sure you can make changes to it. More effort needs to be put into making software fun to use. I want to feel like I'm on a console like in Minority Report or on the Enterprise. But maybe I'm the only one who thinks that way...
